The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz Silver coin was introduced by the Perth Mint in 2014. Since 2016 the Mint has featured a different annual design of the Wedge Tail Eagle on the front side of the coin. In the first two years of the series (2014-2015) the same image of the Wedge Tail Eagle was used.
The 2018 Wedge Tail Eagle 1 oz silver coin is 99.99% pure silver with a nominal value of 1 Dollar.
The 2018 edition will have a limited worldwide mintage of 50,000 coins.
The Wedge Tail Eagle design was created by former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.
In the design, renowned engraver John Mercanti explores the relationship with an Eagle family. The image depicts a large adult Eagle leaning down towards its chickling and another adult Eagle with outstretched wings flying towards its nest. The smooth background enhances the detail of the Eagle family.
The engravings surrounding the Eagle family on the outer edge are the name of the coin “AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE”, the year of issue “2018”, and the fine weight and purity of “1 OZ 9999 SILVER”. The letter “P” can also be seen on the right outer edge and represents the Perth Mint.
The reverse side shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with crown. The portrait of the Queen was designed by artist and engraver Ian Rank-Broadley, who’s initials appear below the image. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the country of origin “AUSTRALIA” and the nominal value of “1 DOLLAR”.
