The 2018 Valiant 10 oz Silver coin is a new coin design from the Royal Mint. The design is a rendition of the famous St. George and the Dragon image that first appeared on the Sovereign Gold coin in 1817.
The Valiant is the first ever incuse silver bullion coin from the Royal Mint. The Mint also applied frosting to the St. George design to enhance the image.
This is the first time the Royal Mint has produced a silver coin with an incuse design.
Both sides of the coin also feature an intricate guilloche pattern, which provides added security against counterfeiting, but also enhances the beauty of the design.
The 2018 Valiant 10 oz Silver coin is 99.99% pure silver and has a nominal value of 10 Pounds.
St. George and the Dragon Design
The reverse side of the coin was designed by British sculptor Etienne Milner, and depicts a rendition of the historic Benedetto Pistrucci design of St. George Slaying the dragon that first appeared on the Sovereign Gold coin in 1817.
The new St. George and the Dragon image is depicted with a first ever use of an incuse design with frosted elements. The lettering in the upper right quadrant of the coin shows the fine weight and purity, which is engraved as “10 OZ FINE SILVER 999.9”. The year of issue “2018” is below the motif. There is also a guilloche pattern that is displayed in the background on both sides of the coin.
The front side shows the right side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with crown and erring. The portrait of the Queen was created by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the nominal value of “10 POUNDS”, and the latin abbreviation “D G REG F D”.
