In 2016, the Royal Canadian Mint issued the SupermanTM silver coin. This special release 1 oz silver coin depicts the famous superman shield and has a mintage of 1,000,000 pieces.
Superman is a cultural icon in the United States and first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. The fictional character Clark Kent, in his role as Superman, has fascinated comic readers and moviegoers worldwide. Superman is the only "real" superhero of non-human origin disguised as a human. To this day, Superman is one of the most popular superhero action figures ever created. In honor of the success of Superman, the Royal Canadian Mint produced a silver coin with the well-known Superman emblem.
The Superman 1oz silver coin 2016 is 99.99% pure, has a diameter of 38mm and a thickness of 3.29mm.
The coin has special security features, which include radial lines on both sides of the coin and a micro-engraved maple leaf located below the superman logo.
The motif depicts the Superman ™ emblem, which has been the logo since the 1960s. The image shows an "S" in a diamond-shaped pentagon. The motif is surrounded by light diffracting radial lines, which provide added security against counterfeiting. On the right, below the logo is a small maple leaf with a laser engraving that includes the last two digits of issue year "16". The purity "9999" can be seen on the left and right side of the logo. Above the logo is the country of origin "CANADA" and in the lower half of the coin the inscription "Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur" can be seen.
The value page depicts a right side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with shoulder neck. She is shown with a drop-shaped earring and pearl necklace. The portrait was created by Susanna Blunt and can be seen on the value pages of Canadian coins. Her initials "SB", can be seen on the queen's right shoulder.
Again, the background, as well as on the front, is characterized by micro engraved radial outward leading lines. The inscription shows the name of the Regent of the United Kingdom "Elizabeth II", the denomination "5 Dollars", the year of minting "2016" and the phrase "D G Regina" meaning "Queen by the grace of God" (Dei Gratia Regina).
