The new Queen’s Beasts series of gold and silver coins were first issued by the Royal Mint in 2016. The lion of England, "Queen's Beasts 2016 - The Lion", was selected for the first coin of the series. The silver coins are only minted in the 2oz size. The gold coins are issued in 1 oz and ¼ oz.

In 1953, at the coronation of Elizabeth II, ten heraldic figures were created representing the family tree of Elizabeth. The sculptor James Woodford (1893-1976) created 10 statues based on the former heraldic animals of the United Kingdom. Each statue is 1.83 m in height.

These creatures are now referred to as the "Queen’s Beasts." The planned motifs in the series also refer to the British coat of arms and are linked to Queen Elizabeth II heraldry.

The following statues were created:

The lion of England
The griffin of Edward III
The falcon of the Plantagenets
The black bull of Clarence
The yale of Beaufort
The white lion of Mortimer
The white greyhound of Richmond
The red dragon of Wales
The unicorn of Scotland
The white horse of Hanover

To give the coin stability and to improve the stackability, the Queen's Beasts series in silver has an edge bar and a rippled edge. In addition, the slightly raised edge protects the motif from scratches and damage.

On the front of the coin is a griffin, an ancient mystical creature, which has been depicted on the English coat of arms for hundreds of years. The griffin was closely associated with Edward III and was engraved on his private seal. The griffin has been described as strong, alert, benevolent and brave.

In the background many intertwined chain links are represented. The inscription, which is located along the outer edge  reads:: "Griffin of Edward III • 2oz • Fine Silver • 9999 • 2017”. The initials" JC "are embossed underneath the motif, and represent coin designer Jody Clark from the Royal Mint.

The reverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II. The background consists of a coarse grained surface, which emphasizes the portrait in a special way and is very unusual for a coin. The inscription on the edge is "Elizabeth II • D • G • Reg • F • D • 5 Pounds"
