The Queen’s Beasts series from the Royal Mint was introduced in 2016. The series will consist of 10 different coin designs that highlight the heraldic Queen’s Beasts statues that were present during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in 1953.
The Queen’s Beasts symbolize the Queen’s heritage, with each statue representing a royal ancestor that preceded her.
The 2018 Queen’s Beasts “Griffin of Edward III” 10 oz Silver coin is the 2 release in the series and has a fineness of 999.9/1000 silver.
The front side of the coin depicts a “Griffin” with outstretched wings holding a shield. In heraldry, the Griffin symbolizes courage, strength, vigilance, swiftness and keen vision. The engravings around the outer edge are “GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III”, “10 OZ FINE SILVER 999.9” and “2018”. The design on both sides of the coin was created by artist and engraver Jody Clark.
The reverse side shows the right side profile of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The inscriptions around the outer edge are the nominal value of “10 POUNDS”, the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, and the phrase “D G REG F D”, which is a latin abbreviation that translates “Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith”.
Griffin of Edward III
The Griffin is closely linked to Edward III who had the beast engraved on his private seal. The shield that the Griffin holds shows the tower of Windsor castle, where Edward III was born, with the flag flying from the turret and the Royal Crown above.
