The Maple Leaf 1oz 2017 has a diameter of 38 mm, a thickness of 3.3 mm and a nominal value of 5 CAD. Due to the high fineness of 999.9/1000, the Maple Leaf 1oz silver coin is very scratch-sensitive. However a high scratch sensitivity is common for all silver coins with a high silver content. It is therefore advisable to keep the coin in its protective tube.

Appearance

In 2014 new features were added to the Silver Maple Leaf to enhance the quality and security of the coin. The traditional bullion finish was replaced with light diffracting radial lines that originate from the center of the coin. In addition, to the right of the maple leaf is a microscopic laser engraving showing a small maple leaf in which the year of mintage can be seen.

The state of the art security features make the Silver Maple Leaf even more counterfeit-proof. The Maple Leaf 1oz 2017 Silver coins also has a rippled edge and an edge bar, which give the coin protection against weight manipulation.

Front

The famous image of the Maple Leaf is predominantly depicted on the front. The representation is very detailed, so that the finest leaf veins can be seen. Beneath the motif, the safety feature is stamped in the form of another small maple leaf. Inside the leaf are the last two digits of the year inserted by a laser.

This safety feature is unique for 1oz Silver and Gold Maple Leaf coins. Stamped above the motif is "Canada" as the manufacturing country. On the left and right of the maple leaf  is the fine content "9999". In the lower half of the coin "FINE SILVER 1oz ARGENT PUR" is engraved. Since English and French are official languages in Canada, "pure silver" has been used in both languages, in English "Fine Silver" and in French "Argent Pure".

Back

The back of the Maple Leaf 2017 shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The design of the portrait is from Susanna Blunt and has been used since 2003. It shows the queen for the first time without a crown, which is unusual for Commonwealth coins. Above the motif is the name "Elizabeth II". Below the coin, the nominal value and the year of mintage is noted as "5 Dollars 2017".

Story

The history of the Maple Leaf dates back to 1979. Because of the apartheid policy of  South Africa many western countries placed a ban on krugerrand gold coins in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Prior to the introduction of the Maple Leaf in 1979, the Krugerrand was the “only” and most successful gold investment coin.

The Royal Canadian Mint amongst others successfully used this market gap and designed a gold coin with a higher purity, up-to-date design and an official nominal value. This is how today's bullion investment coin market was born.

In 1988, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to release a silver version due to the enormous success of the market-leading Gold Maple Leaf. The only other Silver investment coins on the market were the Chinese Silver Panda (1983) and the American Silver Eagle (1986).

At the time it was a risky decision since the silver price was at a multi year low. However, the Silver Maple Leaf was another big success for the Royal Canadian Mint and remains one of the most popular Silver investment coins in the world.

Manufacturer

The Royal Canadian Mint located in Ottawa produces Maple Leaf bullion coins. Founded in 1908, it is the official mint of Canada, and is directly affiliated to the Treasury. The mint is primarily responsible for producing the Canadian Dollar, and also produces many other foreign currencies and various other products such as medals and commemorative coins.

Advantages and Disadvantages

  • Maple Leaf 1oz silver coins are recognized all over the world and can therefore be easily bought and sold with reputable bullion companies.

  • The coin has a high fineness of 999.9/1000 and carries a relatively small premium.

  • The Maple Leaf is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which is one of the most technologically advanced mints in the world.

  • The Maple Leaf is a high quality bullion coin with a beautiful design and cutting edge security features.
