Product Description

The Maple Leaf silver series is one of the most successful silver coin programs in the world. The 10oz Silver Maple Leaf 2017 is a unique coin that combines elements of a commemorative coin with a traditional bullion coin. The design features the “Sugar Maple”, which is a species of the Maple tree that is native to Canada.

Struck from .9999 pure silver, the 2017 10oz Maple Leaf is also known as the “Magnificent Maple”. This coin gives investors the opportunity to buy one of the most popular silver coins, while benefiting from a very small premium.

Dimensions and Weight

With a fine weight of 10oz and a fineness of 999.9/1000, the Maple Leaf 10oz silver coin 2017 consists of pure silver. The precious metal silver is very soft, which is why the Maple Leaf has a low scratch resistance.

Appearance

The Maple Leaf 10oz silver coin 2017, like most other bullion coins, has an edge bar and a rippled edge, which act as protection against weight manipulation. The edge bar protects the motif and allows better stacking of the coin.

Front

The front shows a detailed design of the Sugar Maple Leaf, which is one of many Maple Leaf species that are present in Canada. The Maple Leaf is considered a national symbol of Canada and can also be seen on the Canadian flag.

The two-leaf sugar maple is presented in very detailed outlines and shows fine leaf structures and shading. In the lower part, to the left of the viewer is a very small, filigree single maple leaf, right above the year of mintage "2017".

Right below the smaller Maple Leaf are the initials "CG" which stand for Celia Godkin, the designer of the motif. The edge bar features a unique radial edge, which enhances the security of the coin.

The inscriptions along the outer edge of the coin read:

  • "Canada"

  • "9999 Fine Silver”

  • “10oz”

  • “Argent Pur  9999”

Back

The reverse of the Maple Leaf 10oz 2017 shows a portrait of the Regent of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, as is traditional with Commonwealth coins. The portrait was designed by Susanna Blunt and has been used since 2003. It shows the Queen without a crown for the first time.

The name "Elizabeth II" is imprinted on the left of the motif. On the right are the words D ● G ● REGINA, and below the coin the nominal value of "50 Dollars" is embossed.

The surface of the reverse side of the coin have a fine radial line structure, which extends outwards from the motif.

Story

In 1988 the Silver Maple Leaf was first published with a fine weight of 1oz. In 1998, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a 10oz special edition for the 10th anniversary of the Maple Leaf silver coin. It was limited to only 13,533 pieces worldwide.

In response to the success of the special edition, the Royal Canadian Mint decided in 2017 to include the 10oz size in its portfolio. The new size gives silver investors the opportunity to buy a higher weight silver product in the form of a beautifully designed coin at a small premium.

Manufacturer

In 1908 the Royal Canadian Mint was officially established as a branch of the Royal Mint of the United Kingdom. In 1931 the mint came under the control of the Canadian Treasury.

Since 1969, the Royal Canadian Mint has been a Crown Corporation and operates under the Royal Canadian Mint Act. The mint is responsible for producing the Canadian Dollar along with approximately 74 foreign currencies, Maple Leaf investment coins, medals and collector's coins.

Tips

  • The ideal time to Invest in gold and silver is when the price has “dipped” or is trending lower. In order to recognize a price dip, every investor should familiarize themselves with silver prices in the last decades.

  • Depending on the bullion company, there are price differences. For this reason, you should compare prices before buying to avoid paying an unnecessarily high premium. The premium consists of the costs and the margin of the mint and bullion dealer, plus the current silver price.

  • If you order a larger quantity of silver, a discounted price usually applies.

Advantages and Disadvantages

  • Maple Leaf 10oz silver coins are recognized around the world and can be bought and sold almost everywhere.

  • The coin has a high fine content of 999.9/1000 and carries a very small premium due to the weight of 10oz

  • An advantage of silver coins compared to bars is the closed surface, which minimizes the corroding of the coin. In contrast, cast silver bars very quickly form the famous silver sulfide on the surface.

  • All pure silver coins have high scratch-sensitivity due to the high silver content.

  • A further disadvantage of silver coin coins is the value added tax. Here at Celticgold.eu you can buy silver free of VAT from our Estonian branch. As of now, Estonia is the only European country that does not tax silver.
