The Perth Mint’s Lunar II silver coin series was introduced in 2008. The theme of the series are the 12 animals from the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar. Each year the design of the coin changes and features an animal that plays a part in the calendar.

The Lunar II series began in 2008 with the zodiac sign of the rat and ends in 2019 with the year of the pig. 2017 is the year of the rooster. These coins are brilliantly designed and are an excellent choice for both investors and collectors.

History of Lunar Coins

The first Lunar coins series was launched in 1996. The designs highlighted animals from the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The original Lunar series went for 12 years and concluded in 2007.

The coin program was so successful that the Perth Mint launched the Lunar II silver coin series in 2008. The annual design changes every year and feature an animal from the Chinese Lunar Calendar.


2017 is the year of the rooster. The front of the coin predominately features a proud rooster looking at a Hen to his right. Under the Rooster are three chicklings. The engraving on the bottom of the coin reads “Year of the Rooster”

The back of the 2017 Rooster depicts an image of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of her majesty is present on the reverse side of all editions of the Lunar II silver coin series. On the top of the coin “Elizabeth II” and “Australia” are embossed.

The engravings on the bottom of the coin include the weight and purity “2oz 9999 AG”. The year “2017” and the nominal value “2 Dollars”
