Product Description

Lunar II Dragon coins are among the most successful and popular editions of the series. We are happy to offer a few of the Lunar II Dragon 1 kilo silver coins. The coin is in perfect condition and comes in its original capsule.

The Lunar II series ends in 2019 with the Year of the Pig. After 2019 it is unclear whether the Perth Mint will continue the series. Because of the uniqueness of the series and the small mintage numbers, the coins may increase in value, depending on the annual edition. Both the Lunar I and Lunar II coins are classified as semi-numismatics and carry a small premium.

Lunar I and II coins are appealing to collectors because the designs change every year and the Perth Mint produces a limited number of coins.  You can read more about semi-numismatic here.

The Year of the Dragon

The dragon is the fifth animal in the series and the only mythical creature in the Chinese zodiac. Dragons are the most revered animals in Chinese culture and the Chinese consider themselves their offspring. Throughout history, Chinese emperors were considered rebirths of the dragons.

People in the years 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024 are born in the Year of the Dragon.

Those born in the Year of the Dragon, are said to be healthy, energetic, long-lived, easily excitable, impatient and persistent. They are reliable, honest, courageous and radiate self-confidence. The quest for harmony and righteousness characterizes her as well. They are perfectionists and demand it from others. Year of the Dragon personalities are also believed to have a firm will and are successful.

The motif side of the coin shows a dragon, the most powerful mythical creature in Chinese culture. The design depicts the dragon chasing a flaming pearl. In Chinese Mythology the pearl has mystical power to fulfill the people's wishes. Historically, the dragon has been associated with the Chinese emperor and a symbol of imperial power. On the right side above the pearl the letter "P" is engraved, and is the mintmark for the Perth Mint. Below the motif is phrase "Year of the Dragon" and in the middle of the coin the Chinese character for "Dragon" can be seen.

The value page shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with crown. Under the portrait are the initials "IRB", which stand for the artist and engraver Ian Rank-Broadley. The inscription reads: "Elizabeth II ● Australia ● 1KG 999 2012 30 Dollars"
