The history of the Perth Mint dates back to the late 1800’s when the minted opened in response to the rich discovery of gold deposits in coolgardie and kalgoorlie. The mint was Australia’s third branch of Britain’s Royal Mint. The other two were the Sydney Mint and the Melbourne Mint which are now closed.
One of the first products of the Perth Mint was the production of the world famous Gold British Sovereign. In 1931 the mint stopped making the Gold Sovereign when the British went of off the gold standard.
The Perth Mint’s first silver investment coin series was the Kookaburra which began in 1990. The Kookaburra has been the longest running silver coin series from the Perth Mint.
