The Krugerrand gold coin was first introduced over 50 years ago and is the most widely traded gold coin in the world. More than 50 million ounces of Gold Krugerrands have been sold since production started in 1967.
In 2018, for the first time, the South African Mint introduced the 1 oz Silver Krugerrand. The coin has the same classic design as the Gold Krugerrand and 2019 represents the second edition in the series.
The 2019 Silver Krugerrand contains 1 ounce of .999 fine silver and has a face value of 1 Rand.
The Krugerrand is one of the most recognized bullion coins in the world and produced by the South African Mint.
The motif side of the coin features the Springbok Antelope, which is the national animal of South Africa. The design was created by artist and engraver Coert Steynberg. His initials appear just below the motif on the right.
The top outer edge has the inscription “KRUGERRAND”. On either side of the Springbok Antelope is the date of issue with “20” on the left and “19” on the right. On the bottom is the fine weight, purity and face value “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1”. The edge bar is reeded and slightly raised, which protects the motif from damage.
The value side of the coin depicts the portrait of Paul Kruger, the former president of the South African Republic. The effigy of the South African Statesman was created by Otto Schultz. The engravings on the outer edge are “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”.
