Gold Alloy

The Krugerrand has an alloy that consists of 91.66% gold and 8.34% of copper. This is a classic 22K alloy that gives the coin a slight reddish color. The most famous gold coins that contain a gold copper alloy are the Krugerrand, American Eagle and English Sovereign.

The English Sovereign was the first gold coin to use a gold copper alloy. The alloy increases durability and reduces wear and tear. This is an important feature for circulation coins that were used for everyday transactions.

The Krugerrand is also available in ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz sizes. The fractional sizes are popular because they offer more flexible points to investors. However, the 1 oz size is the most popular.

Benefits of the 2017 Krugerrand

The main benefits to investors are the quality, history and popularity of the Krugerrand. The Krugerrand was the first real investment coin to be offered to the public and 2017 celebrates the 50th anniversary of the coin program.

Investors who purchase the Krugerrand are receiving a high quality, durable gold coin that can be traded in almost any country around the world.

Annual Editions

Because of their popularity, Krugerrands often have a low premium. Although the mintage is different each year, Krugerrand gold coins are produced in high volumes every year.

In 1978 production of the Krugerrand hit an all time high of 6 million pieces, which was the highest mintage year for the coin. The design has stayed consistent over the years differing by only the date on the back of the coin. In 1980 the smaller fractional sizes were introduced for the first time.

The profile of Paul Kruger can be seen on the front of the Krugerrand. Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger was President of the South African Republic from 1882 to 1902. To the left of Paul Kruger, word "SUID AFRIKA" is embossed, on his right the words "SOUTH AFRICA" can be seen. The image of Paul Kruger was designed by Otto Schultz.

The back features an image of the springbok antelope, which is the national animal of South Africa. On the top outer edge of the coin the word "KRUGERRAND" is engraved.

The year of mintage is displayed to the left and right of the springbok antelope. On the bottom of the coin the words "FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD" are embossed. The reverse was designed by Coert Steynberg in 1967.

History of the Krugerrand Gold Coin

The South African Mint introduced the Krugerrand in 1967. The initial success of the Krugerrand created a market for retail gold investment coins. The American Gold Eagle and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins were later introduced to compete with the Krugerrand.

However, the Krugerrand suffered a setback due to economic sanctions over South Africa’s policy on apartheid. This made the Krugerrand illegal to import in many western countries in the late 1970’s and 80’s. This open the door for other popular investment coins like the American Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf.

When the sanctions ended in the late 1990’s, production of the Krugerrand increased again but never reached the pre-sanction level. To this day the Krugerrand is one of the best selling investment gold coins in the world.
