The 2017 fractional 1/10 oz Krugerrand has arrived! Introduced by the South African Mint in 1980, Krugerrand fractional size coins are some of the most popular gold bullion products on the market today.
The name Krugerrand was the result of combining the name of Paul Kruger, South Africa’s first president, and “rand” the name of South Africa’s currency. The Krugerrand is one of the most successful gold bullion programs of all time.
The fractional size Krugerrands are available in ½ oz, ¼ oz and 1/10 oz. The coins are 91.66% gold and 8.34% copper. The copper content gives the Krugerrand better scratch resistance.
The alloy in the Krugerrand was modeled after English gold coins. The English Gold Sovereign, introduced by Henry VIII in 1489, was the first gold coin with a gold copper alloy. The gold copper alloy is also sometimes referred to as “crown gold”.

Fractional Size Krugerrands
The fractional Krugerrands are popular because they give gold buyers more flexible price points to choose from. These coins are ideal for first time gold buyers or for those investors/collectors who are looking to add to a current gold bullion portfolio.
The other benefit to the fractional Krugerrands is that they are easy to buy and sell almost anywhere around the world. They are also easy to carry and can be used for barter and trade.
It should be noted that fractional Krugerrands will carry a higher premium than 1 oz coins or bars. This is because smaller coins are more expensive to mint.
