Let’s continue now with the finer points of “Vault Storage”

Chart 2: Vault Storage Options

The first understanding about professional storage services is that you access them through bullion companies. Companies such as Loomis, Brinks, G4S and Prosegur will not engage with private individuals..

There are many different levels of service and pricing with these bullion companies, and we will explore these differences in-depth. But first, let’s understand the difference between “pooled” and “allocated”.

Understanding Storage Legals

“Pooled” means that you own a fraction of a gold pool. The gold pool is usually kept in 400oz good delivery bars. Your counterparty risk is defined by the solvency of the company you engage with. The advantage of pooled storage is that you can place trades instantly within 5 decimals accuracy and redeem in many currencies.

“Allocated” means that your goods in storage are allocated to your name and if possible segregated, which means they are separated from any other inventory. You do not have any counterparty risk, as your goods are protected by law from insolvency of the storage provider.

Summary:

At first this is a lot of data to process. In general, all investors that wish to have direct physical ownership without any counterparty risk should opt for segregated storage.

Investors that seek to trade with physical gold should opt for pooled services. We cannot say that one option or the other is better. It depends on the overall investment objectives of the individual gold investor.

If you wish to reduce your acquiring costs then you will find that storing small orders is very beneficial. You take advantage of the free storage period with CelticGold and then combine shipments of several stored orders. Shipping several smaller orders together from the vault during the 3 month free storage period will save on shipping fees.
