Add performance into your portfolio by adding semi-numismatics

In preparation for last year’s Investment conference we held in Spain, the CelticGold team researched the most well known semi-numismatics. And what we learned was very interesting: Investors that continuously bought the annual editions of certain gold and silver coin series achieved substantial gains on their semi-numismatic coins.

Before we go into the numbers: Let’s define the term “Semi-Numismatics”

In modern numismatics, which deals with coinage from the twentieth century, a subcategory has now developed in the form of semi-numismatic coins. The coins were originally issued as bullion coins with a small premium and developed into numismatic coins as soon as the collector's value of the coin rises.

Investment coins with limited editions, unique themes and changing motifs belong to the category of semi-numismatics. Special issues and anniversary editions are also part of the semi-numismatics category.

Most well-known semi-numismatic coins:

China Panda (China)
Australian Kangaroo (Australia)
Queen's Beasts series- (Great Britain)
Lunar I series- (Australia)
Lunar II series- (Australia)
Australian Swan (Australia)
Two Dragons (Great Britain)
Somalia Elephant (Germany/Somalia)
Phoenix and Dragon, Phoenix and Tiger (Australia)

Summary:

  • The most well known series gained more than the gold and silver price movements.
  • The “underperformers” outperformed the silver price drop by factor 6. (For example Lunar II Snake 2013 -6%, whereas silver prices dropped 37%.
  • Adding Semi-Numismatics acted as additional insurance for sudden price drops
  • Adding Semi-Numismatics in years with generally low mintages added to the gain
  • Premiums in the year of issue are very close to other “standard” investment products. For example the 2019 Queen’s Beasts Yale trades at 3.5% above spot. The Somalia Elephant at 5.39%. A 1oz Krugerrand trades at 3.34%.
  • The Risk/Reward Ratio is very favorable towards semi-numismatics. The worst case scenario is that you still own an ounce of 999.9 pure gold (or silver) should the chosen product not perform well. When selling an “underperformer” back into the market you will always get at least spot price for this particular product.
