The Australian Dragon is the first ever rectangular gold coin from the Perth Mint. The coin is 99.99% pure 24 karat gold and has a limited mintage of just 25,000 pieces. This is yet another brilliant and innovative product from the renowned Perth Mint.
The Perth Mint chose the dragon as the main motif, which is the most powerful mythical creature in Chinese culture.
This unique new design is only available in the traditional 1 ounce weight. Although the product looks like a gold bar, the legal tender status along with the nominal value of $100 Dollars classifies it as a coin. The same rectangular dragon design is also available in silver.
Weight: 1 troy ounce
Thickness: 2.40 mm
Nominal Value: 100 Dollars
The motif side of the coin depicts the Chinese Lunar dragon with the flaming pearl. In the background are clouds, wind and water. The mint mark “P” is embossed to the right of the dragon.
The value side of the coin depicts the Ian-Rank Broadley portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In the background are sun rays that emanate from the center. The inscriptions on the top read “ELIZABETH II” and “AUSTRALIA 1oz 9999 Au”. The nominal value of “100 Dollars” and the date of issue “2018” are inscripted below the motif of the Queen.
Dragons are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology. In Chinese culture, the dragon is a powerful symbol that characterizes strength, wealth and good fortune. Mythical dragons are also said to have power over water, rainfall, typhoons and floods. In Imperial China, the Emperor often used the dragon as a symbol of strength and power.
