The Britannia Silver coin series was introduced in 1997 by the world renowned Royal Mint. Each coin in the series boasts a purity of 99.9% silver and depicts the iconic image of “Lady Britannia”.
Britannia first appeared on the coins of Emperor Hadrian over 2,000 years ago. Known as the guardian of Britain, she was restored to British coinage during the rule of Charles II in 1672. Britannia remains to this day a British cultural icon and is a symbol of strength and tradition.
The 2019 Britannia 1 oz Silver coin has a fineness of .999 silver and a face value of 2 Pounds.
2019 celebrates the 22nd anniversary of the Silver Britannia.
The Britannia was first introduced as a gold coin in 1987. Because of the huge success of the series, the silver edition was released in 1997. Today, the Britannia is one of the flagship coins of the Royal Mint.
The 2019 edition depicts the Philip Nathan design of Lady Britannia with a corinthian helmet standing strong in the face of a storm. She holds a trident in her right hand and a shield and olive branch in her left hand. The inscriptions that surround the outer margin are “BRITANNIA 2019 1oz 999 FINE SILVER”. The edge bar is reeded and a circle of rectangles decorates the outer edge.
The reverse side shows the 5th generation portrait of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II wearing a royal crown. The design of the portrait was created by Jody Clark, who’s initials appear below the motif of the Queen. The engravings around the outer edge are the name of the regent “ELIZABETH II”, the face value of “2 POUNDS” and the latin abbreviation “D G REG F D”.
