To give the coin stability and improve stackability, the Britannia has a silver edge bar and a riffle rim. In addition, the slightly raised edge bar protects the motif from scratches and damage. Furthermore, on both sides of the Britannia 1oz 2018, zigzag half rectangles, surround the edge bar which provide an additional security feature to the coin.

Scene side

The front of the silver coin depicts the allegory of the Britannia. She wears a flowing robe and a Corinthian helmet on her head. She is armed with a trident that reaches almost to the edge bar and has a shield that stands on the ground. The Britannia also holds an olive branch in her hand, which stands for freedom. The inscription on the front shows the name of the coin “Britannia”, the year of mintage “2018”, the fineness of “999”, the fine weight of “1oz” and the words "Fine Silver".

Value side

The back has the motif of Queen Elizabeth II, and is displayed as a profile with the British crown. The background of the coin has been redesigned, and consists of filigree interlocking links reminiscent of a chain pattern. The lettering of the lapel reads "Elizabeth II D G", "Reg F.D." and shows the face value of the silver coin, which is 2 pounds.

The first Silver Britannia was minted in 1997 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Gold Britannia which was introduced in 1987. Coined by the British Royal Mint, the Britannia was created to meet the growing demand for investment silver bullion in the UK and globally.

From 1997 to 2012, the Britannia had a fineness of 958/1000, which was increased in 2013 to 999/1000. This was necessary because almost all silver bullion coins have a fineness of up to 999.9/1000. Many Gold and Silver investors prefer a higher purity level when purchasing bullion coins and bars. Nevertheless, the fineness of 958/1000 had advantages, especially in terms of scratch resistance and durability. Therefore, coins with a high purity level like the 2018 Britannia should be kept in their protective packaging to preserve the coins surface.

Manufacturer Royal Mint

The Royal Mint is one of the oldest mints in the world. The mint was established in 886 and in 1279 Britain’s numerous mints were consolidated under a single system centralized at the mint in the Tower of London.

In 1976, the Royal Mint and its manufacturing facility was relocated to Llantrisant, a few miles from Cardiff. The most famous leader of the Royal Mint was Sir Isaac Newton. In addition to the Britannia 1oz 2018, the Royal Mint also coins the famous Gold Sovereign.
