With a fine content of 999/1000, the Kookaburra comes in a protective capsule to protect the value of the coins. The fine weight of the coin is 31.103 g which corresponds to 1oz. With a diameter of 40.6mm and a thickness of 4mm, it is the smallest size in the the Kookaburra silver coin series.
The Kookaburra has an edge bar and a rippled edge. The edge bar protects the motif and is slightly higher than the rest of the coin.
The front always shows the motif of the “Kookaburra”, which is the largest kingfisher in the world and lives mainly in east and southeast Australia.
The 2017 motif of the Kookaburra shows two kingfishers sitting on a wooden fence. Above the motif the name of the coin is imprinted as "Australian Kookaburra". Below the motif the year of issue “2017”, fine weight “1oz” and fine content “999” are embossed. Next to the motif is the Mintmark "P", which stands for Perth Mint.
The reverse side of the coin shows the current representation of "Queen Elizabeth II", the country of production "Australia" and the nominal value of "1 Dollar".
In 1990 the Perth Mint introduced the Kookaburra 1oz silver coin. When the Kookaburra was was introduced there was not much competition for silver investment coins. The American Silver Eagle 1oz was launched in 1986, and the Silver Maple Leaf 1oz was brought to market in 1988.
Because of the limited competition, the Perth Mint saw an opportunity to take advantage of the growing demand for silver investment coins. The Kookaburra has been a huge success and is the Perth Mints longest running silver investment coins series.
In 1991 the Kookaburras series was expanded to include the 2oz, 10oz and 1kg coin sizes. The Kookaburra has an annual changing motif, which shows the Kookaburra kingfisher in a different illustration and environment. The only exception are the years 1991 and 1992 where the motif of the 1990 version was used.
The Perth Mint has one of the widest range of precious metals investment coins in the world. The Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint London. It is based in the city of Perth / Australia and its most famous products include:
