Appearance

The Kookaburra is equipped with the usual edge bar and rippled edge. The edge bar is designed to protect the motif and the rippled edge acts as a counterfeit protection.

On the motif side of the 2017 Kookaburra silver coin are an adult and a young Kookaburra sitting on a wooden fence. Below the motif the year “2017”, the fine weight "10oz" and the fine content "999" are inscripted. To the left of the motif you can see the Mintmark "P" for Perth Mint.

The value side shows the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Below the motif are the initials of the artist "IRB" (Ian Rank Broadley). The label reads "ELIZABETH II ◦ AUSTRALIA ◦ 10 DOLLAR".

History

In 1990, a new silver coin named Kookaburra was issued by the Perth Mint for the first time in the weight of 1oz. In 1991 the 2oz, 10oz and 1kg weights were added to the Kookaburra silver coin series. The 2oz Kookaburra was discontinued after 2009.

The 10oz Kookaburra has a yearly changing motif that shows the Kookaburra kingfisher in a different illustration and environment. The only exception was in 1991 and 1992 when the motifs of 1990 version were used.

The Kookaburra, together with the Kangaroo and the Koala, are the most famous representations of Australian fauna.

The Australian "Perth Mint" is one of the most prestigious mints in the world. Founded in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint, the Perth Mint operates its own goldsmith and refinery. Today, it manufactures a wide range of gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion products.

The Perth mint is well known for its investment and collection coins such as the popular Lunar series in gold and silver; the Koala coins in platinum; the silver Koala and Kookaburra and the gold Kangaroo.

The Perth Mint produces mostly coins, but also manufactures bars and precious metal jewelry items. The Royal Australian Mint opened in 1965 and is the sole producer of all Australian circulation coins.
