Fineweight and Fineness
With a fineness of 999/1000 and the fine weight of 31.103g, this Koala Silver Coin is the best-selling coin of the Koala series. But that is not unusual, as 1 ounce gold and silver coins are typically the most popular coin sizes.

The Australian Koala Silver Coin 1oz 2016 has an edge bar and a rippled edge. The edge bar protects the surfaces of the obverse and reverse of the investment coin. The edge bar also improves stackability. As always, the obverse depicts the annual changing subject of a Koala bear. In the 2016 motif, the Koala moves from left to right over a branch. Above the motif the name of the coin "AUSTRALIAN KOALA" is imprinted. Below the motif, the year of issue, fine weight, fineness and metal specification are printed. The reverse depicts the image of Elizabeth II with tiara. The marginal inscription is "ELIZABETH II - AUSTRALIA - 1 DOLLAR".
Koala silver coins are issued annually by the Perth Mint since 2007. In this first year, only the 1 ounce size came to the market. Since 2008 Koala silver coins are also minted in weights of 1kg, 10oz and 1/2oz. In 2011 the 1/10oz coin size was introduced. Since the first edition, the back shows Queen Elizabeth II. The design of the front is always a Koala bear. Next to the Kangaroo, the Koala Bear is the most common symbol of Australia. The Perth Mint also produces the "Australian Kangaroo Gold Coin", which can be bought as a silver and gold coin. The themes on many Australian coins feature animals due to the unique natural landscape of Australia. More than 80 percent of its plants, mammals, reptiles, and frogs are endemic to Australia and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Gold and Silver coins from the Perth Mint are an excellent way to invest in precious metals.
If possible silver should be kept in airtight packages, since it oxidizes in air and forms silver sulfide. Thus, over time silver coins can become darker or even black. Polishing the silver sulfide is relatively easy and will restore the shine to the coin. But it is not recommended as it will reduce the weight and therefore impact the value of the coin. Furthermore Koala silver coins should be treated with care, because silver is a very soft precious metal. Scratches and other damages should be minimized, as it may reduce the resale value.
