The US Mint has a long history of producing silver coins. The Coinage Act of 1792 established the Silver Dollar as the unit of money in the United States. The first release of the American Silver Eagle was on November 24th, 1986.
The Liberty Coin Act of 1985 authorized the production of the the American Eagle 1 oz silver coin. Since its introduction, the Silver Eagle has become one of the most popular silver coins in the world.
The appearance has not changed since the first edition. Therefore, the American Silver Eagle is highly recognised, which is also one of the secrets of its success. In the first year of issue, the coin had a circulation of 5.096 million pieces. In recent years the annual mintage has reached more than 10 million coins.
The 1oz American Eagle 2017 has the same appearance as with previous years. The typical edge bar and rippled edge protect the coin and improve stackability. But the motif of the silver coin is different from the Gold version.
The front depicts Lady Liberty wearing a robe stretching out her right arm. In her left arm she is carrying oak and laurel branches. In addition, she wears a cloth that shows the stars of the different US states.
This depiction of Lady Liberty was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. The design first appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin, which was minted between 1916-1947.
Below the motive and to the left, the rising sun can be seen. The inscription above the coin is "LIBERTY", and on the right side it reads "IN GOD WE TRUST". On the bottom outer edge the year of issue “2017” is inscripted.
The reverse side shows the Great Seal of the United States. The representation depicts a bald eagle with olive branches and arrows in his claws. The beak holds a banner that reads "E Pluribus Unum" which means "from many one". The imprint on the back reads:
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
